RECAP. Sharknado. Pens LOSE

3

5

The Pens headed West to one of the toughest places to play in the league San Jose.  They haven't won there since 1997 or something like that.  Sidney Crosby has also never scored against the Sharks.  This was probably one of if not the best game we've seen all season.  Sign us up for 7 of these in June.  Holy hell.

The first period was in your mouth.  The game went almost 6 minutes with out a whistle.  Up and down.  back and forth.  The pace at the beginning of the game was fast and furious.  It was real fun to watch.  The Sharks had the first good chance of the game when Raffi Torres had a breakaway but Zatkoff stopped him.  The Pens had a breakaway of their own but Kunitz was stopped by Niemi.  The Sharks got a power play and had a bunch of chances but secret service Tanner Glass was blocking everything and Zatkoff was coming up big.  Then for a few minutes the Sharks didn't play pretty good.  Newly acquired Marcel Goc threw the puck on net.  Niemi was down and #MaattaMaanCrush was there with open net.  1-nil Pens.  Then the Pens got a power play.  The puck made its was to Chris Kunitz in the slot.  He ripped one by Niemi to make it 2-nil Pens.  Both Goc and Stempniak look good this period.

The 2nd period calmed down a lot.  Wasn't as much up and down as in the 1st period but it was still good hockey to watch.  Both teams had a power play but neither team could cash in.  Some Shark had a wide open net to shoot at but Simon Despres came out of no where to make a huge play to break up the chance.  Zatkoff had to make some more big saves in the 2nd as well.  There was a little but of 4 on 4 for a while but nothing happened.  Malkin had a good chance as he made a power move to the net but Niemi made the save.  The Sharks started to pick up the physicality late in the 2nd and it paid off.  They started hitting the Pens a lot more and dictated the play and they eventually cashed in.  Someone threw the puck at the net and it somehow made its way into the net to make the score 2-1 Pens.  Brook Orpik took a horrible penalty with under a minute to go in the period.    They weren't able to cash in.

The Pens had a little over a minute to kill on the Orpik penalty to start the 3rd.  They killed it.  The Sharks had a couple of chances though.  The Pens got a 4 minute power play early in the period after Simon Despres was high sticked.  The Pens looked like garbage.  Patrick Marleau went the other way on Malkin but Malkin shut him down.  Marleau got a 2nd chance and this time beat Malkin and Zatkoff to tie the game.  The Pens answered.  Brandon Sutter found Maatta Maan Crush back door and Maatta burid it to make it 3-2.  Theeeeeeeeeeeeen San Jose answered.  Joe Pavelski found Brent Burns in the NHL 14 glitch spot and Burns buried it to tie the game at 3.  Soon after that Jussi Jokinen took a holding penalty.  Pens killed it but the Sharks were everywhere.  They had unlimited chances but couldn't cash in.  Brent Burns had a breakaway but he hit the post with a wrister.  The Sharks would fight back to take the lead.  Joe Thornton threw a harmless puck on net.  It knuckled on Zatkoff and dipped under his glove to make it 4-3.  After a furious rush by the Pens Brent Burns hit an empty netter to make it 5-3 Sharks.

  1. Joe Thornton
2. Brent Burns
3. Olli Maatta

Stuff:
  • What a game.
  • Typical game in San Jose.  Pens get up early.  San Jose storms back to win.
  • Robert Bortuzzo didn't play in the 2nd or 3rd period.  Not good if he is out for an extended period of time.
  • Simon Despres played a really solid game.  Best game he's played in a looooooooooong time.
  • Other than the Thornton goal Zatkoff was solid.
  • Sidney Crosby was a minus 5 tonight.  Woof.
  • Olli Maatta man.  What a player.
  • Both Stempniak had and Goc had silent but good first games with the Penguins.  They look like they'll fit in here well.
Pens have another late one in Anaheim tonight.

Go Pens
