The Penguins were outshot yet again in this game, but the defense deserves a ton of credit. Jeff Zatkoff was outstanding yet again. Brooks Orpik played his best game since the last time these two teams met in DC. Sidney Crosby had 3 points and raised his season total to 87. Chris Kunitz scored two and now has 31 goals this year, unreal. Lee Stempniak will fit in just fine.
Pens took 6 of 10 points on this road trip, with the way it started out, pretty good trip.
The game started out pretty quick for the Penguins. Sidney Crosby found Chris Kunitz streaking up the left side. Mike Green looked like this playing D.
Kunitz went forehand, backhand and lifted the puck back short side. Absolutely nasty goal. Washington came right back though and someone threw an unbelievable pass to Eric Fehr who made a good play getting the puck to his stick and lifted the puck over Zatkoff to tie it at 1. Crosby ended up drawing a slashing penalty. On the Power Play, Crosby was set up by Niskanen and Malkin for a one timer and we're pretty sure he tried to shoot it through the net.
Both teams killed off a couple penalties after that and the period ended 2-1.
The 2nd started and the Pens iced the puck after a long shift from the Malkin line and after that, the game started to tilt, but Zatkoff was up for the challenge. Crosby took a penalty to save a goal, and the Penguins ended up killing the penalty. Joe Vitale took a dumb penalty and the Caps PP went to work. Nick Backstrom was trying to feed the puck to Ovi in his normal spot, and the puck went off of Rob Scuderi's skate and went 5 hole on Zatkoff. Unfortunate bounce. Four minutes later though, Crosby-Kunitz-Stempniak went to work. The chemistry that line is starting to generate is unreal. Stempniak put a shot on net and Kunitz buried the rebound to give the Penguins a 3-2 lead. The Caps ended up outshooting the Penguins 17-6 but the Pens took a 3-2 lead into the break.
We aren't really sure what happened in the 3rd because of the scary stuff that happened in the Columbus-Dallas game. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Rich Peverley and the Dallas Stars organization. Really scary stuff.
The Penguins went into the Jacques Martin Scorpion Death Lock. Washington did get a Power Play with 2:17 left and they pulled Halak but they kept trying to feed Ovechkin but Orpik and Adams wouldnt have any of that. Biggest kill of the year for the Penguins. Game.
1. Chris Kunitz
2. Eric Fehr
3. Sidney Crosby
Notes:
- Sidney Crosby's game elevates when he plays the Caps, look for him to go on a big tear now.
- Chris Kunitz has 31 goals. Thirty-one.
- Lee Stempniak is the perfect compliment to those two
- Brooks Orpik and Craig Adams quietly had a good game.
- Pens have won 7 straight vs Washington
- Ovechkin hasn't scored in like 8 games at home vs Pittsburgh
Probably the best part of winning in Washington
Game 2 between these two in Pittsburgh in like 12 minutes.
Go Pens.
