When you have a 2 goal lead in the NHL. You're on the power play and a chance to go up 3-nil. You can't take a stupid penalty. You also can't take 2 stupid penalties that results in your opponent getting a power play. That is exactly what Evgeni Malkin did last night. We love Geno. We do. But what he did last night was bush league and stupid. The Pens were up 2-0. They were on the power play. They were dominating the period. When Oilers goalie Devan Dubnyk lost his stick. Evgeni Malkin swept it away with his stick. A shoving match ensued. Malkin received 2 minutes for roughing and 2 for interference. So gone was the Pens power play and the Oilers would be going on one. The Oilers scored on it sparking a come back and eventually winning the game in overtime. The Oliers tied the game after Deryk Engelland couldn't catch a perfect pass from Kris Letang. Letang put the Pens back in the lead but the Oilers tied it again. Brandon Sutter called called for a very soft slashing call late in the 3rd. In OT Craig Adams couldn't clear the puck and the Oilers cashed in. There were people on twitter who laughed at Malkin pushing Dubnyk's stick away, but it ultimately cost the Pens an extra point. No the penalty didn't directly cost the Pens the game but it gave the Oilers momentum. What if the Pens are down one on the power play in the playoffs and Malkin does that crap? Will it be funny then too?
Pens play Calgary in 4 minutes.
