RECAP. Shark Food. Pens LOSE

The Pens were in San Jose last night.  A place where they haven't won a game since 1997.  Things looked like they'd be different this time around.  The Pens hoped out to an early lead but like we saw too many time last year let it slip away late.

1st Period
Pens would get on the board early.  James Neal threw a shot at Niemi, Niemi saved it but in the process lost his stick.  The Sharks would turn the puck over in their zone and the puck found its way to Engelland who put it passed a stickless Niemi to make it 1-0 Pens just 24 seconds in.

Pens would get on the board about a minute and a half later when Malkin put the puck on net and it hit off of a Sharks defender and into the net to make it 2-0 Pens barely 2 minutes into the game.

Sharks would pull Niemi and Thomas Greiss would be in net for the Sharks.  This is when the Pens needed to add 2 or 3 more goals but couldn't.  Pens were flying around all period and couldn't put anything past Greiss. Adams fought someone in the first too.  Engelland wrecked Joe Thortons life someone in there too.

2nd Period
Deryk Engelland fought someone early in the 2nd.  Patrick Marleau would bring the Sharks within 1 after his shot found a way through MAF to make it 2-1.  7 minutes later Malkin would notch his 2nd of the night after a rebound hit off of his leg and found it's way into the net to make it 3-1 Pens.  Somewhere Mark Madden vomited the 45 McRibs he ate yesterday all over some stripper.  Orpik got called for a bizarre interference penalty in the 2nd after he hipchecked someone after they dumped the puck.  Pens killed it off.  Only powerplay all game for either team. Ben Lovejoy would leave the game in the 2nd and not return after crashing into the boards.  More on him later.

3rd Period
The Pens weren't playing well to end the 2nd and it carried over into the 3rd.  The Pens needed to add one more goal to bury the Sharks but couldn't.  They let the Sharks climb back into the game.  Ryan Clowe would bring the Sharks within 1 after he roofed a backhand on Fleury.  The Pens were 5 minutes away from getting the win.  MAF was playing out of his mind.  But of course the Sharks would tie it at 3.  5 minutes left.  The Pens had tons of chances late.  Cooke hit a post, and Sullivan had a chance to put in a wraparound but was stopped.  The game would slip into overtime.

Overtime
Sharks would have a few chances early but couldn't score.  Malkin had a chance in Greiss' mouth but Boyle knocked the puck away.  Shootout time

Shootout
1st up for the Sharks was Logan Couture.  Saved
1st up for the Pens was Kris Letang.  Made a sweet move but Greiss was having none of it
2nd for the Sharks was Dan Boyle.  Saved by Fleury
2nd for the Pens was Evgeni Malkin.  Came in slow faked a slapshot then shot.  No dice
3rd for the Sharks was Ryane Clowe.  Goal
3rd for the Pens was James Ne.....Pascal Dupuis.  Yes Pascal Dupuis.  Greiss poke checked him

Game.  Pens fall 4-3

3 Stars
1. Thomas Greiss
2. Evgeni Malkin
3. Ryane Clowe

Quick Thoughts
  • No clue why Dupuis was up 3rd for the Pens when you have the number 2 goal scorer in the league on the bench.
  • MAF had a solid game.  Last 2 goals weren't his fault
  • After being a game time decision Kris Letang had 30+ minutes of icetime
  • Ben Lovejoy broke his wrist in the 2nd.  Expect Alexandre Picard who was called up yesterday in case Letang couldn't go to take Lovejoy's place.

Pens next game is Saturday at 10:30 against the LA Kings

Go Pens
