RECAP. Let's Hear It For New *Fart noise*. Pens WIN

4

2

Before you read this recap we want you to do something for us.  Go look up 'dumpster fire' in the dictionary.  Bet you see a picture of the 2014 New York Rangers.  Now go to google and look search "World's Worst Hockey Player".  Bet you get 2,000,00 hits to some page pertaining to Rick Nash.  The Rangers are a mess.  They look defeated, exhausted and uninterested.  If it wasn't for Henrik Lundqvist this series would be over.  But we are going to a game 5 tomorrow night in Corporate Entitlement Country Club Library, and the Pens have a golden chance to end the Rangers season.

Evgeni Malkin was on Bath Salts off the opening faceoff.  He was in the Rangers mouth constantly.  It felt like it was gonna be a special night for him.  Brook Orpik returned and he put his balls in Brad Richards mouth early.  Richards acted like Orpik said his mom wears combat boots or something.  Then Geno and his bath salts were back on the ice.  After Fleury made some saves at the other end the Pens turned an Anton Stralman turnover into a goal.  The Pens went flying into the Rags zone.  Malkin dished to Crosby who tried to go back across for the NHL 14 cross crease goal but it was blocked.  The puck bounced right to Bath Salt Man and he did this:

That is a pretty sweet goal but in all honesty here, Lundqvist should save that no problem.  Whatever.  Bottom line its 1-nil Pens.  The Pens got a power play when Lee Stempniak went all Zack Morris on NHL 14 on McDonagh.  Only thing he didn't do was score because McDonagh hooked him or something.  Pens didn't really get many opportunities on the power play though.  Beau Bennett got a chance right after but he waited for Pascal Dupuis to have another kid before shooting it which gave Lundqvist time to get over and make the save.  Dan Girardi tried to end Chris Kunitz when he boarded him.  No penalty was called but when Kunitz gave Girardi a love tap and Girardi acted like he got shot it was a penalty.  Like the Rangers were gonna score on that power play lol.

Brooks Orpik's return was short lived.  He hit Zuccarello and looked like he hurt his knee.  *Paging Robert Bortuzzo*.  After 145 minutes the Rangers were finally able to beat MAF.  Matt Niskanen apparently didn't see Carl Hagelin flying through the neutral zone.  He was in La La Land which left Hagelin 1 on 1 with Scuderi.  Welp.  1-1.  The Rangers had a few chances to change the script in this game buuuuuuuuuuuuuuut they blew it.  Speaking of blowing.  Let's talk about Rick Nash some more.  He had the puck on a 3 on 1 and shot the puck so far wide of the goal I think it ended in Staten Island.  What a horrible hockey player.  And hey.  While we are piling it on Rick Nash, let's talk about the Rangers next power play.  Malkin was sent off for some Ranger being clumsy.  Rick Nash was carrying the puck through the neutral zone.  If you already started laughing we don't blame you.  But wait there's more!  While Rick Nash was carrying the puck through the neutral zone he fell, in what looked like he was diving for the last hot dog in the post game buffet.  Patrick Gibbons picked up the puck after Letang sprung him.  His original shot was stopped but Suttertron came in and banged home a rebound.  2-1 Pens.

In the 3rd Marc Staal continued to head hunt Sidney Crosby.  He took a run at Sid but Sid ducked and Marc Staal stumbled over him like a drunk broad on the Southside on a Saturday night trying to avoid some drunk moron from the Steelers going straight GTA down the street.  Then Rick Nash drove Crosby into the boards from behind.  Sid was ok in both instances.  Then, karma his Marc Staal like that dude hit Snooki in the first season of Jersey Shore.  Jussi Jokinen threw a puck at goal that hit Marc Staal's skate and made its way under Lundqvist to make it 3-1 Pens.  Froto from Lord of The Rings tried to get the Ranger back into it when he beat MAF to make it 3-2.  It was a shot that Fleury saves 99 out of 100 times.  Whatever though.  The Pens made it 4-2 soon after.  The 14-87-71 line was out there again and Malkin fed Kunitz right in Lundqvist's mouth.  4-2.

And that is all the Pens would need to wrap this game up.

1.  Evgeni Malkin
2. Brandon Sutter
3. Best In The World

Stuff:
  • The Rangers had 25 turnover last night.
  • The Rangers had 15, yes 15 shots on goal.
  • Jussi Jokinen is tied for the playoff lead in goals with 6.
  • Kris Letang and Marc Andre Fleury are playing some kind of hockey right now.  So great to see both of those guys have so much success right now after everything both of them have gone through in the past 12 months.
Pens look to wrap up the series tomorrow night at 7.

Gameday. Game 4. Pens at Rangers.

Madison Square Garden. 7:30 pm. NBCSN.

Game 4 is probably the biggest game of this series. The Penguins can take a commanding 3-1 series lead with a win and could possibly turn this into a short series or the Rangers can tie it and make it a best of 3 going back to Pittsburgh and turn it into a long series. Look for the Rangers to put out one of their best efforts into this game. In the 2nd Round, the team who scores first has won all 11 games so far so as we all know how important the first goal is. Marc-Andre Fleury will look to extend his 120 minute playoff shutout streak in this game and the Rangers are 0 for their last 33 on the power play. If the Penguins put together the effort they have the last few games, they should have a pretty good chance to win this game.

  • Jussi Jokinen is tied for 2nd with 5 goals and Paul Martin is tied for 3rd with 8 assists.
  • Sidney Crosby now has 7 points in the playoffs and one would think he's only gonna score more frequently.
  • Because of the Ineptitude of the Rangers Power Play, the Penguins have now killed 82.5% of Penalties so far in 9 playoff games.
  • The Rangers are only scoring 2.20 goals per game so far through 10 playoff games
  • The Penguins are 6-0 in Regulation and 0-3 in Overtime this Postseason.

RECAP: Marc-Andre Shutout. Pens WIN. Lead series 2-1.

2

0

The Penguins rolled into New York and allowed the same number of goals 24 hours after they shutout the Rangers. Marc-Andre Fleury has been the best goaltender of this series and its honestly not even close. The Rangers are now like 0-483219432 on the Power Play and Fleury hasn't allowed a goal in 120 minutes. He is also undefeated in regulation games in the playoffs. Oh, and to those who say he can't play in the playoffs, he's quietly 3rd in Save % and 5th in GAA of all playoff goalies. Sidney Crosby scored just as we predicted and the Penguins steamrolled the Rangers even though they only recorded 15 shots. This is what the puck looks like to Fleury right now.

The pace of this game started almost exactly like Game 2. The Penguins had a good pace going in the game and the Rangers iced a puck early and Dominic Moore conned Marcel Goc into doing something stupid. Not sure it was a penalty and it was a pretty solid act job by Moore, but Goc has to be smarter than that. The Penguins penalty kill easily killed the Rangers power play like normal and the Penguins picked up the pace again. The Rangers did have a little more in their step in this game and they actually got some good chances on Fleury but he was like Nah. Late in the period, James Neal dropped a pass off to Evgeni Malkin. Some jobber for the Rangers (I would use his name but I don't think anyone has ever actually heard of him) skated his face into Neal's stick and fell to the ice like he got shot and his lip was bleeding. Play continued until like 6 seconds later when the ref decided it should be a penalty. Penalty or not, you can't wait 943294329 seconds to call it. They gave Neal 4 minutes and 2:15 would carry over if the Penguins killed it. The Rangers changed something from their first power play and Rick Nash got the first bolt of energy in his life and almost tucked one behind Fleury but he got fat and missed the net. Fleury may have also got lucky with a post in there somewhere, but regardless, nothing went in and we went to the break tied at 0.

The Rangers second part of that Power play and it didn't generate much. 0 for 32 for the Rangers now. Bylsma put Crosby and Malkin together just after the penalty ended and they got a little going. The Rangers did get the puck back into the Penguins zone. Robert Bortuzzo got the puck and delivered one of the best stretch passes of all time right to Sidney Crosby's tape. It was Sid and the Queen all alone and Sid went 5 hole and Lundqvist was about 3 seconds late and the puck found the end of the net. 1-0 Pens. At some point after that, the Rangers won an offensive zone faceoff, Zucarello was robbed by Fleury and then rung one off the post as the Penguins were scrambling. The MSG crowd reacted as the puck went in the net and for some reason, the ref blew it dead to check the replay. They deemed the puck never went into the net and dropped the puck, which actually probably helped the Penguins considering they were scrambling and chasing to the puck. Shortly after, the Penguins picked up some momentum after that and with about 9 minutes left in the period, the refs remembered that you can actually call penalties against the Rangers as Kevin Klein went to the box for molesting Beau Bennett. The Penguins power play was good but they didn't get anything past Lundqvist. Shortly after the penalty ended, Jussi Jokinen got called for a week holding penalty. 0-33 and just as the penalty expired, Mats Zucarello dropped a pass to Brad Richards except it missed Richards and went right to Jussi Jokinen who was in all alone with Lundqvist. Jussi did his patented move and put it past Lundqvist to make it 2-0 with his 5th of the playoffs. Even though the Rangers were generating a lot of chances, the way Fleury and the Penguins were playing, you felt like it was a huge mountain for the Rangers.

Not a whole lot happened in the 3rd. The Penguins generated 1 shot on goal the entire period. The Rangers pulled Lundqvist with about 2:45 left but they never really got a good chance on Fleury. The Penguins were blocking shots left and right and were doing a good job in front of Fleury. Game.

1. Marc-Andre Fleury
2. Sidney Crosby
3. Jussi Jokinen

Notes:
  • Fleury is the first Penguins goalie to record back to back shutouts in franchise history.
  • Sidney Crosby's goal was the 41st of his playoff career and broke a 13 game goaless drought.
  • Robert Bortuzzo has filled in nicely since coming into the lineup for Brooks Orpik.
  • With the Orpik injury, it forced Bylsma to go to a pairing of Letang-Martin and those two have been the Penguins best defensive pair and its not close. Kris Letang is playing as good if not better than he was the year he received a Norris Candidacy.
The Penguins look to take a commanding 3-1 series lead Wednesday night at the Garden at 7:30 PM on NBCSN.

Gameday. Game 3. Pens at Rangers

Madison Square Garden. 7:30 pm. NBCSN.

Series Tied 1-1.

24 hours later, they meet again. The Penguins put together their best performance of the season last night against a somewhat worn out Rangers team. Game 3 is always a pivotal game in a 7 game series and this is no different. Tonight is the Rangers 5th playoff game in a span of 7 days. Dan Bylsma said today that fatigue won't be a factor unless the Penguins make it one with a heavy forecheck so look for more of the same from last night from the Penguins. The Rangers typically play well at home but the Penguins have won more games at MSG than any other NHL arena (besides home).

  • Marc-Andre Fleury won his 50th playoff game last night and his 7th career playoff shutout. He is 9 wins off of Tom Barrasso for #1 on the Penguins all time playoff list.
  • Sidney Crosby played his best game in the playoffs last night. If he keeps playing like that, he's gonna score and more importantly, the Penguins are gonna win more than they're not.

RECAP. Shutout City. Pens WIN. Series Tied 1-1.

3

0

When this series started, a lot of people were saying games 2 and 3 being back to back would be the most important games of this series, and the Penguins played like it. The Penguins started the game the way they should and eventually just wore out the Rangers and the most important thing was, they didn't sit back on the lead. We've been highly critical of Dan Bylsma for the games the Penguins have lost these playoffs, but he deserves as much credit for the games they've won. He had his team ready to go from the start and he made adjustments that worked. Recap to follow.

Crosby-Kunitz-Stempniak started the game with Letang and Martin. When you saw the Rangers lineup, you thought, why is Bylsma trying to play into the Girardi-McDonagh pair with Sid, but the Penguins got the puck off the opening draw and kept the puck in their zone for a good minute or so and you could really feel the effort coming until Chris Kunitz got pushed on top of the Queen who cried tears enough to flood the Hudson River or something. Not sure what the ref saw but he put his arm up and put the Rangers on a power play. (Note: Rangers power play was 0 for its last 19 coming into the game). The Rangers never really sustained puck possession or pressure and the Penguins killed the penalty with ease. After that, the pace picked up a little bit. Matt Niskanen skated into Dan Carcillo and Niskanen's hand went up near Carcillo's face. Carcillo reacted as if someone shot him with a sniper rifle from section 230 and his head jerked straight back and the ref bought it and sent Niskanen to the box. The Penguins penalty kill just laughed and killed that too. Bylsma sent out Malkin and Crosby right out of that and they started getting to the forecheck until Malkin hit Dan Girardi and Girardi decided he would destroy himself and dive and draw a penalty. The Rangers power play did get a few chances but the Pens killed that too. After the kills, the Penguins took over the period and eventually got a power play and they got a few chances but nothing came out of it. Right at the end of the period, Sidney Crosby made Ryan McDonagh look like a traffic cone but Lundqvist made the save and then right after that Sid got another chance but Lundqvist stopped that too.
The 2nd started as 4 on 4 but shortly into the period Kris Letang made some unreal play with his skating, got in on Lundqvist but ran out of room as a Ranger defender came in on him and forced him to take a quick shot that Lundqivst made the save pretty easily. The Rangers got a couple shifts in the Penguins zone but Fleury was up to the challenge and the Penguins D cleared out what either was rebounded off of Fleury or never got to him. Eventually Chris Kunitz took a hooking call but the Penguins killed it off easily and just as Kunitz came out of the box, the puck came to him on a breakaway but Lundqvist robbed him. A couple minutes later, Kris Letang got a pass from Evgeni Malkin and threw the puck on net and it appeared to hit Chris Kunitz and go in, but it hit a spraling Dan Girardi and went in. Regardless of what it hit, it was 1-0 Penguins and you felt like that was all they might need with the way Fleury and Lundqvist were playing. The Penguins picked up the pace from there but Lundqvist was sharp all night and he had to be with the scoring chances the Penguins were getting. Pens headed into the break up 1-0.
The 3rd started as the 2nd ended, with the Penguins keep pushing forward and the Rangers never really pushed back. About halfway through the period, with the score still 1-0, the Rangers got 2 or 3 breakaways that Paul Martin, Kris Letang, and Evgeni Malkin all backchecked and cleared the puck to safety. The Penguins were buzzing and with about 5 minutes to go in the game, Dan Girardi decided it was a good idea to stop James Neal from skating to the puck and the ref sent him to the box. This was a big power play and the Consol DJ played the jammed up siren and the crowd went nuts. The Penguins first unit was out there and they had good puck movement and some good shots but they either deflected wide or Lundqvist was there to stop it. (Note: During that part, Sidney Crosby's stick broke while he had the puck, he dropped his stick, went glove to skate and kicked a perfect pass to Paul Martin's tape. This wasn't a game changing play, but you know Sidney Crosby is on top of his game when he makes plays like that). As the second unit came on, James Neal came streaking down the zone on a mini 2 on 1 and he did the NHL 14 shot off the pads right to Jussi Jokinen who buries the puck behind the Queen to make it 2-0 Penguins. Consol went absolutely bonkers. Right after the goal, Dan Bylsma sent out Leroy Gibbons, Joe Vitale, and Craig Adams because there was about 3:00 left in the 3rd. Those 3 with Scuderi and Bortuzzo kept the puck in the NYR zone for about a minute and the Rangers just looked gassed. The Rangers finally got Lundqvist out of the net and Sidney Crosby made an unbelievable block shot with about 1:10 left and the puck cleared the zone. Letang got to the puck and flicked it up ice. Evgeni Malkin chased down whoever was skating there, dove for the puck and put it towards the net and it trickled in. Game.

1. Marc-Andre Fleury
2. Kris Letang
3. Henrik Lundqvist

Game Notes:
  • Henrik Lundqivst whines more than any goalie I've ever seen in my life.
  • Sidney Crosby had 6 shots on goal. He didn't get on the scoresheet but he played the best game of the playoffs. He's gonna get a goal sooner than later.
  • Kris Letang was the best skater on the ice for either team. He played the best two way game a defenseman could play. Thats why he got the contract he did.
  • Marc-Andre Fleury stopped all 22 shots he faced. Playoff save % now at .914 (since that's apparantly the tell all stat)
Both teams have the same travel, but tomorrow is the 5th playoff game in 7 days for the Rangers. Gotta think that's starting to add up.

Game 3 is in like 6 minutes.

Gameday. Game 2. Pens vs Rangers.

Consol Energy Center. 7:30 pm. NBCSN.

Coming off a disappointing overtime loss in game 1 the Pens look to rebound tonight in game 2.  Well.  I guess if you aren't ready to play, game 1 shouldn't be disappointing because you could have expected it.  Hopefully tonight the Pens decide to start playing at puck drop as opposed to an hour later.  Or else this series could be going back to New York with the Pens down 2-0.  It would also be nice for Sidney Crosby to make an appearance tonight.

Round 2 Preview

After we were delighted with 3 Game 7's on Wednesday night, we waste no time to jump into Round 2. And even though none of you probably care, this is our Hot sports takes predictions and previews for the 2nd Round. Also blog note, Haylie disappeared because she sucks so we added two new writers to the blog. Zack and Nate. You can follow them on twitter
@ZackMorris82
@bobbles412

We're gonna start with the East and with two teams that hate each other. Montreal and Boston.

Both of these teams made quick work of their opponents in the first round and have been waiting for a long time to play. Boston took Detroit out in 5 games and Montreal swept Tampa Bay. So far in the playoffs, Boston's power play is 37.5% and killed 90% of penalties. Montreal scored on 15.4% of power plays and killed just 71.4% of penalties. One of the biggest storylines of this series will be which goalie will out play the other one. Carey Price vs. Tuukka Rask might be the best goalie dual in these playoffs. Rask's save % in Round 1 .961 and his GAA was 1.16. Carey Price Save % was .904 and his GAA was 2.33. One would think this series would favor Boston, but as you know, with rivals, anything can happen. Prepare for a lot of blood and hatrid in this series and don't be surprised if it goes 6 or 7 games. Montreal won season series 3-1.

Series Schedule :

Game 1 : Thursday May 1, 7:30 in Boston
Game 2 : Saturday May 3, 12:30 in Boston
Game 3 : Tuesday May 6, 7:00 in Montreal
Game 4 : Thursday May 8, 7:00 in Montreal
Game 5*: Saturday May 10, TBA in Boston
Game 6*: Monday May 12, TBA in Montreal
Game 7*: Wednesday May 14, TBA in Boston

Predictions:

Andrew : Canadiens in 7
Brandon : Canadiens in 6
Zack : Canadiens in 7
Nate : Bruins in 7

To start off, the Rangers have a short turn around after playing games 6 and 7 back to back against Philly by playing in Pittsburgh Friday. They'll eventually play 6 playoff games in 9 games including another back to back situation between Games 2 and 3 of this series. In Round 1, the Penguins converted on 20.7% of power plays and killed 74.1% of penalties. The Rangers converted on 10.3% of power plays and killed 71.4% of penalties. The Rangers haven't scored on the power play since Game 2. Henrik vs Fleury should be a key matchup in this series as well as who will try to shut down Sidney Crosby. Henrik had a .919 save % and a 2.11 GAA against Philly while MAF had a .908 save % and 2.81 GAA against Columbus, but as we noted before MAF had a .949 save % when play was 5 on 5. Both teams like to play fast and up and down so it should be a pretty entertaining series. This is the first postseason meeting between the two since 2007-08 and the Penguins are 4-0 lifetime against the Rangers in the playoffs. The teams split the season series 2-2 (each team won a game in the shootout).

Series Schedule:

Game 1 : Friday May 2, 7:30 in Pittsburgh
Game 2 : Sunday May 4, 7:30 in Pittsburgh
Game 3 : Monday May 5, 7:30 in New York
Game 4 : Wednesday May 7, 7:30 in New York
Game 5*: Friday May 9, TBA in Pittsburgh
Game 6*: Sunday May 11, TBA in New York
Game 7*: Tuesday May 13, TBA in Pittsburgh

Predictions :

Andrew : Pens in 6
Brandon : Pens in 7
Zack : Pens in 6
Nate : Pens in 6

As much as Brandon will hate this, the Kings are the hottest team right now in the playoffs. After falling down 3-0 in the series to the Sharks, the Kings won 4 straight becoming the 4th team in NHL history to rally from down 3-0 in a series to win that series. In the 6 games vs the Stars, the Ducks scored on 26.9% of Powerplays and killed 89.7% of penalties. In the 7 games vs the Sharks, the Kings scored on 23.8% of Power plays and killed 84.6% of penalties. The main reason the Kings got past the Sharks in the final 4 games was because of Jonathan Quick. After allowing 17 goals in the first 3 games, Quick only allowed 5 goals, including a shut out in game 5 to preserve the series for the Kings, his numbers will be inflated, but the Kings are here because of him. The Ducks aren't sure which goalie they're going with. Frederick Andersen played Games 1-5 and started Game 6 but was pulled after allowing 4 goals before the Ducks eventually came back to win in OT. Jonas Hiller shut the door so don't be surprised if he gets the start in Game 1. This is another great matchup and it easily could go 7 games. The Ducks won the season series 3-0-1.

Series Schedule:

Game 1 : Saturday May 3, 8:00 in Anaheim
Game 2 : Monday May 5, 10:00 in Anaheim
Game 3 : Thursday May 8, 10:00 in Los Angeles
Game 4 : Saturday May 10, TBA in Los Angeles
Game 5*: Monday May 12, TBA in Anaheim
Game 6*: Wednesday May 14, TBA in Los Angeles
Game 7*: Friday May 16, TBA in Anaheim

Predictions :

Andrew : Ducks in 7
Brandon : Ducks in 6
Zack : Ducks in 6
Nate : Ducks in 7

In one of the more shocking 2nd round series, and a repeat of last season, the Wild and Blackhawks meet once again. Minnesota pulled off the upset from the top seed in the Central Division, Colorado Avalanche and Chicago destroyed St. Louis after being down 2-0 in the series. The Blackhawks seem to be healthy and Corey Crawford is playing just like he did last spring. The Wild have used 23432432 different goalies and its hard to tell who they'll use. Ilya Bryzgalov got the win in Game 7 after making just 1 save because Darcy Kuempfer was hurt. Our old friend, John Curry (friend used lightly) is now the backup if Kuempfer can't go. Chicago scored on 15.0% of power plays vs St. Louis and killed 93.1% of penalties. Minnesota scored on 14.3% of power plays vs Colorado and killed 88.0% of penalties. These teams seem kind of even on paper, but we know Chicago has more skill. It likely will come down to goaltending and effort. Minnesota doesn't seem like they can be taken lightly after erasing 4 Colorado leads in Game 7 and also coming back from down 3-2 in the series. These teams split the regular season series (One of Chicago's wins was a shootout). Game 1 is Friday at 9:30 in Chicago.

Series Schedule :

Game 1 : Friday May 2, 9:30 in Chicago
Game 2 : Sunday May 4, 3:00 in Chicago
Game 3 : Tuesday May 6, 9:00 in Minnesota
Game 4 : Friday May 9, TBA in Minnesota
Game 5*: Sunday May 11, TBA in Chicago
Game 6*: Tuesday May 13, TBA in Minnesota
Game 7*: Thursday May 15, TBA in Chicago

Predictions :

Andrew : Blackhawks in 7
Brandon : Blackhawks in 6
Zack : Blackhawks in 5
Nate : Blackhawks in 6

We know you probably don't care about our predictions but we don't care. This is shaping up to be an incredible round of hockey with teams who don't like each other. To this point, the NHL has gotten realignment dead on and we're getting great playoff matchups out of it. Can't wait to see how this round goes. Sit back and relax because it's only gonna get better.

Go Pens.
