Goals on Goals on Goals. Pens WIN

7
6

Sometimes in sports people use the phrase "earning your colors" when you go to a new team.  Usually that comes after someone scores a big time goal or hits a home run against their arch rivals.  Or you can have the game Brandon Sutter had last night.  His "Welcome to Pittsburgh" moment against Philadelphia but last night he more than "earned his colors".  This is one of those games that you want someone to watch if they are trying to get into the whole hockey thing.

1st Period
Tomas Vokoun was back in net for the Pens last night.  His last 2 starts weren't his best so he was looking for a nice rebound game.  Things didn't get off to a good start as Brandon Prust scored early to make it 1-0. I'll give you 3 guesses where he scored that from.  If you guessed unmarked in front of the net you win.  Game went into meh mode for a while.  Brandon Sutter would tie the game for the Pens with under a minute to go in the period on the power play.  Beau Bennett notched an assist on the goal.

2 Period
If you've watched the Pens at all this season you know the 2nd period has by far been their worst period this season.  And a little over 4 minutes in it looked as if things were gonna stay that way.  Max Pacioretty scored to make it 2-1 Habs.  Instead of getting scored on unlimited times after going down 2-1 like the Pens did the past 2 games they scored 3 of their own.  Chris Kunitz banked a shot in off of Carey Price to tie the game at 2.  Best In The World made an unreal play to coral the puck and take it in near Price.
Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnn
Then Matt Cooke got into the action.  He sniped Price twice in a matter of 5ish minutes to take the score to 4-2 Pens.  It looked as if the Pens were gonna get out of the 2nd period in the lead.  But the Habs had other ideas.  Brian Gionta made it 4-3 and then P.K Subban tied it with less than a second left.  Then he celebrated like he won the Stanley Cup.  What an idiot.  Anyways 4-4 going into the 3rd.

3rd Period
The 3rd Period started just like the first 2.  Desharnais made it 5-4 Habs a little over 5 minutes into the 3rd.  The way this game was going you knew there was gonna be more scoring.  Defense and goaltending was optional all game.  A little over 3 minutes after the Habs took the lead Chris Kunitz was all like "Lol shut up Montreal".  He beat Price to tie the game at 5.  Then under 2 minutes later.....
Best In The World struck again.  He beat Price to make it 6-5 Pens.  But you knew that wasn't going to last.  As much as you wanted it to you knew it wouldn't and Brian Gionta made sure it didn't when he tied the game at 6.  It felt like it was all Habs after that.  If you had the feeling that P.K. Subban or Colby Armstrong were gonna score you weren't the only ones.  But the Pens held the fort and the game went to overtime.

Overtime
The Habs got a chance or two in overtime but that was about it.  Then the Pens got their chance and finished it.  Despres started a rush and got the puck to Neal in the neutral zone.  He entered the zone and gave the puck back to Simon Despres.  He dished the puck to Sutterton who undressed Pacioretty in the slot and fired a laser past Carey Price to give the Pens a 7-6 win.

Jordan who?

3 STARS
1. Brandon Sutter
2. Max Pacioretty
3. Best In The World

Stuff:
  • Vokoun was alright.  He wasn't terrible either.  You could blame 2 maybe 3 of the goals on him.  The other ones were the Pens not clearing people out from in front of the net.
  • 3 points for Best In The World
  • 4 point night for Kris Letang.
  • Beau Bennett had another point but only played 9:15.  He has 3 points so far this season and is 2 points away from tying Eric Tangradi's career total.
  • The Pens are 12-4 with Simon Despres in the line up.  But yet he's scratched every 2 games.
  • 2 goals and 64% from the faceoff dot from Suttertron.
  • Chris Kunitz is tied for 3rd in the league in scoring.  Yes you read that right.  Chris Kunitz is tied for 3rd in the league in points.  He had 3 points last night.
  • Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis have unreal chemistry.  If you want to find what a perfect line would be it's those 3 guys.
  • 2 goal night from Matt Cooke too.

Tampa comes to Consol tomorrow at 7:30.

Go Pens
