The Penguins remain undefeated (lol) after beating, crushing, and destroying the Maple Leafs 5-2. Although, you may say how is 5-2 crushing and destroying? It's the fact that the Pens outshot the Leafs 41-25 and their puck possession was crazy. Another big night for the number one line of Crosby, Kunitz, and Hornqvist as they recorded six points altogether. Pittsburgh's top line has accounted for 54.8% (6/11) of all goals and 12/30 (40%) of all points through two games (Penguins.NHL.com). Safe to say we all feel the same. Just a dominant performance for the Penguins.
The Penguins opened the scoring 6:44 into the first period with a Christian Ehrhoff blast from the point missing the net and Patric Hornqvist picking up the rebound from the boards and just slamming home this impossible angle shot. Basically under Bylsma the Penguins would have dumped that puck and changed. A minute later the Penguins made it 2-0 on a goal from #BestInTheWorld 87. The Penguins were using the boards to score goals, which never would have happened under Bylsma unless it was an accident. Hornqvist pass to Letang, missed the net on the left side, just to be put in by Sidney Crosby. Oh and by the way, it was the first of a few powerplay goals, as the Penguins went 3/5 on the powerplay. The next goal came at 17:46 of the first when Crosby had the puck down low on the right boards, patiently waited and just threw it to the net (emphasizing this because the Penguins never used to do that) and Kunitz tipped it home, assists by Malkin and Crosby. Just like Anaheim the Pens had a 3-0 lead in the first period except they'd keep it this time...
Now it would not be a typical Pens game if the Pens didn't give up a powerplay goal at some point. So at 4:18 into the second period the Penguins decided to give up a powerplay goal to Joffrey Lupul and company. The goal was actually a tip-in in front of the net so it was not a bad goal, just one that makes you think "oh god, here we go again." Lupul the goal from Gardiner and Rielly. Penguins still very much carried the play in the second period though, after allowing that goal the Pens buckled down and in the famous words of an old coach... "got to their game..." The next goal came at 13:46 into the second from a guy who misses all of training camp just to look great the first two games. Evgeni Malkin had a beautiful snipe from the top of the left circle, as he got the puck, basically skated a lap or two, dished it to Letang and then Malkin decides to shoot it. What a shot, what a goal. Assists go to Letang and Crosby. Let it be known, with James Neal on the Penguins, Malkin would have looked to pass the puck instead of ripping it home, what a goal. 4-1 Pens end of the second.
Nothing really happened in the third period except for Brandon Sutter scoring a fantastic goal at 8:26 into the third. Sutter basically worked the puck down low and just had a Malkin like moment possessing the puck, then he dropped the puck to Malkin who dished it back to Martin for the shot and Sutter got the junk in front of the net. Get it junk? Because his junk was all over Root Sports last year? ZINGGGGGGGGGGG. Either way, Sutter has been playing some hockey since the playoffs last season. If this is the Sutter we paid, it's totally worth it. Way to grind it out for a goal. The Leafs would go on to add a powerplay goal from Tyler Bozak about two minutes later. We would take time to describe this goal if it meant the Leafs gaining momentum and getting back into the game. They did not though and that goal was just another tally. Altogether, the Penguins had a night, going 3/5 on the powerplay, recording 35 hits, and outshooting the Leafs 41-25. A dominant win.
LMAOOOO you thought there was overtime, it's the Maple Leafs.
1.) Sidney Crosby - 1 goal, 2 assists = 3 points
2.) Evgeni Malkin - 1 goal, 2 assists = 3 points
3.) Patric Hornqvist - 1 goal, 1 assist = 2 points
Game Notes:
- Patric Hornqvist recorded 9 shots on net
- Crosby, Malkin = 3 point nights
- Crosby, Malkin, Hornqvist, Fleury, Letang and Kunitz are good at hockeys
- Rob Scuderi is still playing like trash so #FreeHarrington
- Brandon Sutter is playing like the guy we traded for so long ago
- Crosby is on pace for 246 points this season
- In addition, Crosby has now won 6,000 faceoffs for his career so there's that
- Penguins PK still allowed 2 goals, so look for adjustments (because it's not Bylsma) to come
- Maple Leafs suck
- Phil Kessel played this game and you wouldn't even know it
- a fan tossed his jersey on the ice with about 8 minutes to go in the third
Blow Leafs Blow
