Crosby Watch continues

Huge developments in the past hour.  Apparently a non-Penguins news conference was called, then called off.  Then the Pens issued a statement.  Read it here.

Shero and Sid are set to speak at 6:15.  Follow @hf_steve on twitter for the latest, cause no way we can keep the blog updated.

RECAP. 7 Is Better Than 6. Pens WIN

Creative.  Yeah we know.

The Pen rolled into St. Louis for their second meeting with St. Louis this season.  Last meeting the Pens lost 2-1 in overtime.  This game ended up going to a shootout even though it never should have made it that far.  Whatever.  St. Louis can blow us.

1st Period
The first period was back and forth action.  Yep.  That's about it.

2nd Period
The Pens got a power play early.  Most of it looked like a couple of monkeys trying to hump a football but made everything worth it when James Neal put one in the back of the net to make it 1-0 Pens.  James Neal finally got named to the all star team.  We still think the all-star game sucks.  The Pens would add another when Steve Sullivan batted one out of the air to make it 2-0.  Berglund brought St. Louis within 1 late in the period.

3rd Period
2 things happened in the 3rd period.  First Berglund scored his 2nd on the game after probably the worst penalty shot call of  all time.  Fuck off.  Then Jackman took one of the most embarrassing dives of all time.
What an embarrassment

The game would go to overtime.

Overtime
Overtime was back and forth with both MAF and Brian Elliot, who is somehow an all-star making spectacular saves.  Neither team would score and the game would go to a shootout.

Shootout
Malkin would score for the Pens and some idiot would score for St. Louis.  Then Kunitz put the game away for the Pens in the 4th round.

Happy All-Star break.  Pens don't play for like a year.

Just Like Dale Hunter. PENS WIN

Afternoon games on NBC have been mud for years.  Listening to Doc Emerick yelling about DRIIIIVVVEEEEEESSSSSS and Regis McGuire between the benches basically acting as a PR guy for half of the guys he watched as teenagers in juniors is enough to make you want to vomit.  Combine that with Mike Milbury and his bizarre opinions and you were probably set up for a garbage broadcast and a garbage game.  But the Pens pulled off a big win yesterday, and that's all that matters.

First Period
The Pens came out flying.  Dustin Jeffrey had a chance and then Kunitz drew a penalty.  Caps win the faceoff, Roman Hamrlik tries to clear and Letang keeps it in.  Letang from the Goncharville.  1-0.

About a minute later Malkin wins a faceoff from the left circle.  Neal from the top of the circle.  2-0.

The Pens dominated the rest of the period.  Then Eric Tangradi took a high sticking penalty with 11 seconds left to let everyone know he was actually dressed for the game.

Second Period
You could almost feel that the Pens were destined for a let down in the second if you've watched any game this year.  Mike Knuble jukes out Fleury and hits the post.

Ovechkin jumps into Michalek's head.  If it was Matt Cooke....

Then Michalek elbows Hendricks.  Caps to PP

Caps go to work.  Ovechkin draws a hold on Orpik.  5-on-3 for the Caps.  Then Paul Martin draws a penalty.  Pens kill off the first penalty to Michalek, but the Caps score on the 4-on-4.  Then the Caps tie it three minutes later.  Vomit.

A scrum breaks out after a Caps penalty and the Pens miss just wide on the delay.  TK fights Troy Brouwer.

Powerplay is garbage .

Third Period
Sum of all fears as Ovechkin scores off the rush.  3-2 Caps.

The game goes back and forth until Neal scores with 13 minutes left to tie it.  Shot through three people.
Pens dominated the last ten minutes of the game.  But Brouwer provides a scare and hits the post with 30 seconds left.  Game goes to overtime.

Overtime
Quick Notes
How unreal are Malkin and Neal right now?

Roman Hamrlik sucks.  He makes the same as Kris Letang.

Caps are under .500 with Dale Hunter.  Was Boudreau really the problem?

Ovechkin and Michalek have hearings today for their hits.  Ovechkin deserves about 4 games.  Repeat offender, left his feet and hit to the head.  Also the game was on national tv.  Michalek deserves a fine or nothing.  Hendricks body positioning is all over the place.

GAMEDAY 48. Pens vs Capitals

Consol Energy Center
12:30 NBC

This is the final Pens/Caps game of the season unless these team somehow meet in the playoffs.  The Caps are still a mess even though they are only like 2 points back of Florida.  The Caps are also coming off a 3-0 loss to Carolina.  The Pens haven't beaten Washington at home in the regular season since December 27, 2007.  No that is not a typo.  But honestly we could care less about regular season wins against the Caps, who recently raised a "2011 Regular Season Eastern Conference Champions" banner.  All we care about is those playoff wins.

RECAP. Ole Ole O Eat A Dick. Pens WIN

The name of a team can get you pumped for any game.  When you hear Montreal Canadiens it's one of those game where you wish you could put skates on and go out on the ice and take a run at P.K Subban.  The Habs always get away with unlimited penalties and P.K Subban is always a dick.  Last night he showed once again that he is the dirtiest player in the game today and has no respect for anyone in the league when he hit Chirs Kunitz with a slew foot.  But he's not Matt Cooke so the Canadian media didn't bother reporting about it.  Cough Darren Dreger cough.  But for the first time in the last 5 games the Pens went into the 3rd period trailing by 2.  Evgeni Malkin hadn't been heard from all game.  You knew that would last.  After probably the most emotional period of the season the Pens were able to force overtime and eventually win in a shootout.  What a satisfying win.

1st Period
Some dick scored 34 seconds in to make it 1-0 Habs.  We don't care who scored because the Habs suck and their players are garbage.  Except for Hal Gill.  Would gladly have in back in Black and Gold.  Any way. This was the first time the Pens played the Habs since the Kris Letang concussion.  Chris Kunitz didn't forget and fought Pacioretty.  To bad he didn't give him the Jay Beagle treatment.  Kris Letang looks as good as he did before he got hit.  He scored a pretty nasty goal to tie the game at 1.
What a player.  Then the Habs made it 2-1.  Whatever.  Pens had some chances late in the first to tie but couldn't.

2nd Period
Montreal scored early on the power play to make it 3-1.  But you never had the feeling the Pens were out of it.  Maybe during the 6 game losing streak they wouldn't have come back and the Habs would win 5-1.  But this isn't the team the we saw during that 6 game losing streak.  Plus it helped that Peter Buddah or whatever his name is was in goal.  The Pens brought the score to 3-2 when Dustin Jeffrey scored his 1st of the season.  Dustin Jeffrey was on another level last night.  Best he's played all season.  But the one goal deficit wouldn't last.  The Habs would score late in the period to make it 4-2 going to the 3rd.  Once again, still didn't feel like the Pens were out of it.
3rd Period
Going into the 3rd you knew if the Pens get one they were going to get two.  Montreal looked like they didn't want to be on the ice during the 3rd.  It was all Pens.  Dustin Jeffrey scored his 2nd of the game of he grabbed the puck after Steve Sullivan got high sticked, and ripped a wrist shot into the net to make it 4-3.  After that it was only a matter of time.  The Habs started getting chances but MAF had the brick wall up after at one point having allowed 4 goals on 9 shots.  Haven't seen that bad of a save percentage since John Curry vs Vancouver a couple years ago.  Then with about a little over 3 minutes left Evgeni Malkin did what we were all waiting for.  He got open, and James Neal found him and Malkin launched a bomb into the net.

What.  A.  Shot.  What a celebration.  Loudest that arena has been this season by far.  Such an emotional goal even Steigy almost blew a load.  The game would head to overtime.  Evgeni Malkin has his balls in everyone's mouth and they have no clue what to do.

OVERTIME
We would usually recap the overtime but well something else happened.  P.K Slewfoot made an appearance.

What a dirty hit.  But he plays for Montreal so he only got a slap on the wrist and a $2,500 dollar fine.  Kunitz could have been severely injured on this play.  Watch how he falls into the boards.  Of course Darren Dreger didn't have anything to say about this.  Oh and to top it all off he got fined because it was deemed a "dangerous trip".  Not a slew foot.  If this is Matt Cooke everyone, especially the Canadian media would be calling for Cooke to be kicked out of the League.  The Canadian Media is a joke and so is P.K Subban.

SHOOTOUT
The Pens choose to shoot first and the sent out Kris Letang.  His shot was saved.  MAF made a save on someone.  Then Evgeni Malkin was 2nd for the Pens.  You could have closed you eyes and not watched.  You knew he was scoring.  1-0 Pens in the shootout.  Then some dick broke his stick and missed the net for the Habs.  James Neal had a chance to win it but his shot was saved.  Then MAF stoned some asshole to secure the 5-4 win for the Pens.

3 STARS
1.  Dustin Jeffrey
2.  Evgeni Malkin
3.  Some Montreal Dick

Extra:
  • 5 game win streak for the Pens
  • P.K Slewfoot was fined $2,500 dollars for his slew foot
  • No one got injured again
  • 6 is better than 5
  • Caps at 12:30 on Sunday.

Game 47 - Montreal Canadiens at Pens

We hate the Habs.

He's back

Go Pens

Darren Dreger Sucks

Darren Dreger was in rare form this morning by creating controversy about a suspected "slew foot" by Matt Cook on Brad Richards in last night's game.
Here's the hit in question
That's the best angle we could find because ROOT Sports sucks so we have to listen to some Rangers fan whine about it.

Cook has not been suspended for the hit.  The "kicking motion" occurs when Richards feet are already up in the air.

We take several issues with this non-story.  Cooke has been on the receiving end of at least two headshots by our count, and Darren Dreger was quiet.  We also don't think the league would even look at this without Canadian media whining.  The suspicion that the media could be influencing discipline procedures is disgraceful.  Look at the Neal high sticking fine after PK Subban actually threw a slew foot at him.

All we're asking for is consistency here.

RECAP. Evgeni Malkin in your Mouth. Pens WIN

The Pens made their 2nd trip to MSG last night.  The Pens were on a 3 game winning streak and looked to make it 4 last night.  So far this season the Penguins hadn't been able to beat the top teams in the East, or the Atlantic Division for that matter.  But last night the Pens finally reversed their fortunes and walked in to MSG, stuck their balls in the Rangers mouth and waled out with a 4-1 win.  And Evgeni Malkin is still not human.  This game also marked the return of Kris Letang who is still better at playing defense than everyone.

1st Period
The Pens got on the board early when Chris Kunitz put home a Paul Martin rebound to make it 1-0.  The Pens registered like 900 shots before the Rags even registered 1.  Pretty sure the Rangers didn't know there was a hockey game being played for like the first 10 minutes of the game.  Pens could of had a 3 goal lead in the first but Lundqvist held the fort.  Since when did Eric Tangradi become a fighter.  No clue what he's doing but he fought someone.  The Pens have fought in every game since releasing Steve MacIntyre.  Evgeni Malkin ducked another check this game.  He's been doing it his entire career and now people are starting to bitch about it?  Get real.  Brandon Dubinsky is still an idiot.

2nd Period
The Pens got a power play because Brandon Dubinsky sucks.  Letang pushed Dubinsky and as Dubinsky fell and couldn't control his stick and high sticked Letang.  The best part was every idiot in MSG thought it was on Letang.  Pens couldn't cash in though.  Somebody tied the game for the Rangers.  We really don't care who it was to be quite honest.  Nothing else happened this period.

3rd Period
A tie game going into the 3rd period.  5 games ago the Pens would have blown this.  The would have let in 2 qucik, soft goals and the game would have been over.  But not this time.  The Pens went into the Ranger zone 3 on 1, the puck found its way to The Asian Sensation Richard Park who ripped a shot past Henrik Lundqvist to make it 2-1 Pens.  The Pensblog has some unreal pics and a big time gif of Dick Park Market in their recap.  Steigerwald said Sullivan scored the goal.  Fail.  If that didn't suck the life out of MSG than Evgeni Malkin sure did.  He picked off a pass or something, embarrassed some Rangers defensman the roofed one on Lundqvist to make it 3-1 Pens.  Somewhere in here Steigy said the Pens had a 2 goal bulge.  Yep.  The game was over.  The Rangers were already in the locker room waiting for their next game.  But Evgeni Malkin was still playing.  He would add an empty net goal to give the Pens the 4-1 win.

3 Stars
1.  Evgeni Malkin
2.  Marc Andre Fleury
3.  Kris Letang

Remember when the Pens couldn't win a game and the season was over like 5 minutes ago?  Good times.

Pens next game is in 10 seconds against Montreal.  The first game since Pacioretty hit Kris Letang.  Hopefull Letang punches Pacioretty in the face.

Game 45 - Canes at Pens

1900
ROOT Sports

After a six game losing streak, winning one game is a big deal.  Winning two games in Florida, where you don't typically play well, is a bigger deal.  Combined with the news that Jordan Staal is not as injured as expected, James Neal playing, and Kris Letang very close to returning, the bleakness of that losing streak has been put behind us and brighter pastures appear to be on the horizon.

Big game tonight against Carolina.  With the Rangers, Caps, Maple Leafs, and Blues on the schedule coming up, the Pens need to rack up points against bottom feeders like Carolina to remain in the playoff picture.  While this game isn't must win from a math standpoint, these two points are huge.

RECAP. It's Evgeni Malkin's World and we Just Live in It. Pens WIN

Longest title you'll ever see us do probably.  Oh well.  The Pens, who finally snapped their 6 game losing streak Friday night rolled into Tampa to take on the Lightning who were on their own 6 game losing streak an in 15th place in the Eastern Conference.  Re read that.  Tampa Bay.  15th place.  Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

1st Period
The Pens got the ball rolling early.  James Neal on the power play from one of the worst angles you could imagine made it 1-0 Pens.  Then minutes later Dick Park Market walked into the slot and put one right in Garon's mouth to make it 2-0.  Filthy snipe by Richard Park.  This game could have easily been like 4-0 after the first period

2nd Period
The 2nd period was all Pens again they just couldn't beat Garon.  Tampa finally started generating some chances but couldn't beat MAF.

3rd Period
The Pens looked like the put the game away early.  James Neal with a dirty one timer on the power play made it 3-0.  Bob Errey says "For all intents of purposes this game is over"  Tampa scored the next 3 goals and tied the game at 3.  Then Dominic Moore decided he'd piss off Evgeni Malkin.  Idiot.  Malkin put a sick backhander past Garon and then deked Garon out of his jock strap and gave the Pens a 5-3 lead.  Then the play everyone is talking about.  A pissed of Vinny Lecavaljoke tried putting Malkin into the 4th row.  Malkin ducked the check like he always does.  Lecavalier proceeded to go after Malkin.  He eventually tracked Malkin down and sucker punched him.  Here is video of the play.
Keith Jones and Mike Milbury made themselves look like asses too.

Jokes

Evgeni Malkin would add an empty netter for the natural hat trick to give the Pens a 6-3 win.

3 Stars
1.  Evgeni Malkin
2.  James Neal
3.  Vinny Lecavalcryer

Extra:
  • No one got hurt for the 2nd game in a row.
  • There is no hearing for Lecavalier for his cheap shot on Malkin.  Guess you only have to get hurt or look at P.K Subban the wrong way to get fined or suspended.
Pens next game is Monday against Carolina.

RECAP. The Streak Snapper. Pens WIN

Yes you read that title right.  Read it again.  Pens WIN.  The Pens stumbled in to Florida last night and kicked the doors down and probably played their best game of the season.  From start to finish the Pens outplayed the Panthers and finally scored more than 1 goal.  Florida looked like the Penguins were just going lay down and let them have the win.  But that wasn't the case.  Evgeni Malkin was on PCP the whole night and MAF played like someone threatened to light his balls on fire.

1st Period
The first period almost got off to a disastrous start to the Pens.  Someone was left all alone in MAF's mouth but fanned on the shot.  Panthers score there the game might be over.  After that the Pens were on acid.  Matt Cooke had a  breakaway was saved by Clemmensen but it was saved.  The rest of the period was something like this.  Ping.  Ping.  Ping.  Ping.  Ping.  Ping.  Ping.  The Pens had back to back power plays but hit unlimited posts and crossbars.  Then Chris Kunitz had a breakaway.  He beat Clemmensen but hit a crossbar of course.  You had the feeling the Pens wouldn't score a goal the rest of the season.

2nd Period
After the 1st period you had the feeling the Pens were never going to score.  After hitting about 32483625943 posts in the first, Paul Martin getting robbed in the slot early in the 2nd, and since it was Friday the 13th, you couldn't help but wonder.  But then it happened.  It wasn't pretty but it happened.  Scott Clemmensen misplayed a puck and it eventually made its way to Steve Sullivan who had a wide open net he buried it.  The Pens were up 1-0.  The Pens needed a 2nd goal.  But couldn't get it right away.  Florida started pressuring the Pens and MAF was lights out the entire time.  Late in the period Malkin and Kunitz went in to the Panthers zone on a 2 on 1.  Malkin ripped a bomb that was saved by Clemmensen but Malkin grabbed the rebound behind the goal and banked it in off of Clemmensen to make it 2-0 Pens.

3rd Period
The Pens went into the 3rd with the lead for the first time since a 4-1 win win Winnipeg.  They would add to that lead early.  The Pens went in on a 4 on 2 rush.  Dupuis found Orpik, whose defensive play started the rush, who found TK who ripped a bullet passed Celmmensen to make it 3-0 Pens.  A collective sigh of relief had to have been let go by the team and the fanbase.  After 2 and a half weeks without a win you finally felt like this was the game the streak ended.  Things got interesting when someone scored for Florida to make it 3-1.  But James Neal said "Don't worry guys.  I got us."  Ok he actually din't say that but his actions did.  He came down the left wing and snapped one passed Clemmensen to make it 4-1.  And finally after 16 days without a win.  6 losses and falling out of the playoffs the Pens got a huge W.

3 Stars
1.  Evgeni Malkin
2.  James Neal
3.  Marc Andre Fleury

NO ONE GOT HURT EITHER!!!

Game 43 - Pens at Panthers

Bank Atlantic Center
Sunrise, FL
7:30 pm
ROOT Sports

Big day to be a Pens fan.  Dejan Kovacevic dropped big news in his column today, saying that the locker room was split over Crosby.  The Pens responded in kind by showing solidarity with their captain, all wearing the "C" at practice, while Malkin wore a "K" because he's Russian.

Crosby also spoke today after practice.  He got clearance to resume skating earlier this week.  He also spoke after practice to the media.  Notice that he is wearing a hat in the interview.  Whenever you get a headache, gut reaction is to take off your hat.  #HatWatch

Almost forgot that there is a game tonight.  Florida is third in the conference and first in the Southeast Division somehow.  Really big turnaround for them given their spending frenzy this year.  Pens are in 9th and out of the playoff picture.  Big game tonight for them, as they look to snap this losing skid.

RECAP. Can't Catch a Break. Pens LOSE

The Pens finally looked like they actually wanted to be on the ice last night.  For the first time in the last 6 games they looked like the actually wanted to win a hockey game.  But Tomas Vokoun was lights out and the Pens couldn't catch a break.  A bad turnover by Evgeni  Malkin led to the only Caps goal of the game.  The Pens had plenty of chances to tie it in the 3rd but couldn't beat Vokoun.  The losing streak is now at 6.

How close are we to this?

Game 42 - Pens at Caps

RECAP. Without a Pulse. Pens LOSE

Going into last night you had that feeling this might finally be the night the Pens turned it around.  James Neal wasn't as hurt as originally reported and Secret Service Craig Adams wasn't dead either and was in the lineup as well.  But of course the Pens played without a pulse again and would fall to the Senators 5-1.  The highlight of this game was probably some fan behind me yelling "Go listen to Nickleback" after Spezza made it 3-0.  Another Pens game, another game played without a pulse.  Being realistic here its incredibly hard watching this team play hockey right now.  A team with the talent they have in the lineup should not be playing as bad as they are.  Yes they are missing Sidney Crosby.  Yes they are missing Kris Letang.  But they do have Evgeni Malkin, Chris Kunitz, James Neal, a solid defense and a goalie who could win the vezina every year.  This team is showing absolutely no heart right now.  But saying that apparently makes us bad fans because we aren't allowed to be realistic.  Can't wait to see what the fan police have to say about this.

Pens head to Washington tonight.  Wonderful.

Dustin Penner get hurt...While eating pancakes

Yes you read that right.  Dustin Penner got hurt while eating pancakes.  This has got to be one of the most bizarre injuries we've ever seen.

If you need something to make you feel better about the ridiculous amount of injuries the Pens have, here it is.

Here is a quote from Penner.

"I woke up fine, sat down to eat and it locked right up. It never happened to me before. I couldn't stand up. I was probably at the third stage of evolution. So my wife helped me get dressed, and then I drove to the rink here, to hope they could do some magic and get it opened up. Kinger [trainer Chris Kingsley] just looked at me and said, 'Go home.' So I got some treatment and went home."
"Apparently it's one of those mysterious things, where you can throw it out (from) sneezing. I just leaned over to dip into some delicious pancakes that my wife made. It's just like it [the pain] wraps around you and squeezes. … So it was disappointing. Hopefully it's just an isolated incident, and not something that's going to become chronic."

The X-Generation

JS city

RECAP. Boiling Point. Pens LOSE

Last night the Pens losing streak hit 4 games.  This post isn't about last nights game it's about what happened in the concourse following the game.

From Nick aka @ChirstmasCrosby on twitter.

"Ok, so here is the entire story.

I was walking out of the game... Out of the corner of my eye I saw a beer can flying past, so I turned around and saw it hit the ground. Before it hit the ground, it hit a man. A group of 2 men threw a beer at a man and 6 month pregnant wife going down an escalator. The man and his wife were going to just let it go, be civil, and walk away. Then the 2 men who threw the beer started yelling at the man, saying pretty nasty things, such as, "I hope you have fun tonight fucking that fat, ugly cunt." At that point, the husband and his wife, who were both a down escalator, turned around and walked up the down escalator. The husband started throwing punches at one of the two men, and the other man started throwing several hard lefts and right at the pregnant woman. The woman was bloodied and fell down onto the escalator. When the husband saw how bad his wife was injured, he sprinted all the way up the down escalator, tackled the man who punched his wife, and pummeled him as hard as I have ever seen a human punch. He and his wife then got back on the escalator. The man who was just pummeled along with his friend, were not done. They went back to the escalator, one of them punching the husband, the other grabbing the 6 month pregnant woman by her hair so hard, that she was completely elevated off the escalator by about of a foot. When the man stopped punching the husband, the other one let go of the woman's hair, where she then fell a foot onto her back on the down escalator already bloodied and VERY disoriented. They continued to yell and scream at each other, then the police were involved and broke everything up. The police questioned me and I explained to them this exact same story, then was allowed to leave after I gave them my phone number in case they, "had any further questions for me."

It should be noted, that the woman was clearly pregnant. She was a fairly skinny girl, and at 6 months, you could CLEARLY tell she was due to have a child."
This is as low as it gets.  A 4 game losing streak in January and this is happening.  What's next?  Are people going to throw people through the giant CEC window?  This isn't 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, or 2006.  This is 2012.  The Pens will get through this.  Tuesday marks the half way point of the season.  The Pens have time to right the ship.  It may happen Tuesday against Ottawa or it may happen next week.  But the Pens WILL get through this.  Everyone calm down, be patient, and back away from the ledge.

"Nothing Worth Winning Ever Came Easy."

Side note:
  • Jordan Staal out 4-6 weeks.  James Neal out for "weeks".  And Craig Adams left practice due to a "severe knee injury"
So this is where we are right now.

Evgeni Malkin trolls Canada and teammates.

So last night Canada took on Russia in the World Juniors.  If you forget what happened in last years game here is a refresher.  (Sorry Canada)

Canada jump out to a 3-0 lead heading into the 3rd.  Russia scored 5 goals in the 3rd to win the game 5-3 and the Gold Medal.

Fast forward to last night.  The rematch.  And out of no where Evgeni Malkin trolls Canada.  Enjoy.

Apparently he bet James Neal too.        Russia would win the game 6-5.
Evgeni Malkin is probably public enemy number 1 in Canada right now

No word if there were any riots last night.  As far as we know the Suicide Alert Level in Canada is still on high.
          Pens play soon
